In their follow-up "EP" to Endless Summer, The Midnight come bursting out of the gate with crystal-clear production and a sonic-infused backdrop to showcase some extraordinary and brilliant songs. This is about the point in the Midnight's discography where I start to notice how thematically driven their albums are. Where Endless Summer felt part day, part night - Nocturnal is all night, in every which way.
Again, when I first heard the likes of Shadows & Crystalline I was blown away by the originality and uniqueness to the sound. In fact, as I stumbled upon the Midnight shortly after this album's release, I was going back and forth between Endless Summer and Nocturnal to decide which was the better album. Endless Summer had my FAVORITE Midnight songs on it - but it also had a tonne of filler. In the beginning, there were songs I would regularly skip. With Nocturnal meanwhile, I could just put that on and listen to the whole thing (minus the last song which took a bit to grow on me).
Back to back, Nocturnal is far more consistent than Endless Summer. The weaker parts of it aren't that weak, and the strong parts are almost as strong as Endless Summer's.
The Midnight proved with Nocturnal that they were not a one trick wonder. As expansive and detailed as Endless Summer was, you could never see them coming out with something so fresh and new just a year later.
Personally, I love this album to death. It does have a couple of weaker moments in Collateral (a transitional song) and Tokyo Night Train (instrumental outro), but even those songs add to the immersive atmosphere buried in the core of this album.
This is where the Midnight peaked. All the songs are between 5 and 7 minutes, giving a lot of substance to each of them. An essential album for lovers of synth-wave, saxophone, and techno prog.
